Hello… It’s me… with an Adele-based business lesson.

Adele broke the internet this week.

Not because she co-wrote another film score, or recorded another genre-defining album.

Not because she broke another industry record, or won another accolade or award.

Not because she created yet another moment-defining, groundbreaking piece of art.

But because of the size of her f*cking waist.

Now, don’t get me wrong, reaching any goal is a huge achievement. If that goal happens to be losing 7 stone, then power to you. For many folks, gaining or maintaining weight is the goal.

Either way, the amount of energy, focus, dedication, and straight up discipline it takes for such a dramatic physical transformation can’t be underestimated, or undermined.

I’m not here to minimise another womxn’s hard work, no no.

But the reaction? It’s pi*sing me off.

At the time I’m writing this, that picture on Adele’s Instagram account, has 187,000 comments and 9 million likes and counting.

Her Glastonbury Festival headline set? 4k comments and 500,000 likes.

Her TIME Magazine cover? 14k comments and 740,000 likes.

Her Ellen Show appearance? 21k comments and 3.5 million likes.

Why is an artist’s weight loss celebrated SO MUCH MORE than her work?

Now, if you’re new around here, (or even if you’re not) — you might be thinking “wait a sec, I thought you were going to dish sales copy tips, not celeb gossip written loosely in the style of Carrie Bradshaw…”

And I promise the lesson is coming.

Because what I learned from observing the reaction to Adele’s “happy b’day to me” post — and freaking annoying as it is — you don’t get to decide what other people deem as “successful”

You can be a Grammy award-winning, multi-millionaire, triple-Platinum-everything global superstar like Adele — but there will still be folks out there who will only applaud you when you show up as a size 6.

So THIS is the reminder I want to serve you today, my friend: IF, right now, you’re still looking to the people around you to give an approving thumbs up and say “Hey, you did good!”you’re looking in the wrong place.

Seeking approval from your coach, your followers, your mom, your partner, your high-school friends is a fast-track to disappointment.

Their image of success might not line up with yours.

You must define your own success first.

So, go on.

Go get your awards.

Tour the world.

Headline the sh*t out of your industry.

Make your money.

Live your life.

Be whoever the heck YOU want to be.

Then, show them what else you can do.

FIVE — Her first ever TV appearance on Jools Holland, aged 19. Welp.

FOUR — Rapping to Monster by Nicki Minaj on carpool karaoke with James Corden. Get a singer who can do both ;)

THREE — Hometown Glory. As someone who’s spent a lot of my adult life feeling homesick, this song makes me bawl without fail.

TWO — Her introduction and performance of Someone Like You, live at the Royal Albert Hall. Adele gave her audience a piece of her freaking soul that evening. The LOVE she has for her community is so tangible and real, it just gets me.

ONE — Glastonbury. This link is just the highlights, but I’ve watched her full Glasto set more times than I can count. It’s amazing. The end.
